Upgrade Motorola Droid to CyanogenMod 9

Today I will show you how to upgrade your Motorola Droid to CyanogenMod 9 using few easy steps.  CyanogenMod 9 provides a whole set of new features which is a reasonable point to read the rest of the article. Here is how to run Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich on your Motorola smartphone and enjoy some cool features.

Things You should know first :

The latest CyanogenMod 9 firmware is not the official version released or endorsed by Motorola. The developers of this ROM didn’t provide any exact information about changes or bugs that may disrupt the functionality of the device. So, follow the instructions carefully.
Be careful, this update should not be applied on non-rooted Motorola Droid phones ( because, these are networked-locked with carriers ). Visit our Android Flashing section first to root your Motorola Droid.
We don’t want your phone to turn out to be an expensive paper-weight. So proceed at your own stake.
Prerequisites :

  • Rooted Motorola Droid.
  • Download CyanogenMod 9 archive for the Motorola Droid here and save it to your PC.
  • Download the Google Apps (gApps) package here and save it to your PC.
  • Temporarily disable (or uninstall) any antivirus or security app on your phone(Important !).

Steps Involved :

  1. First, connect your device to your PC via USB cable ( I guess you know how to ! ).
  2. Now, copy the CyanogenMod 9 archive and the gApps archive to your phone’s SD card.
  3. Disconnect your phone from your computer.
  4. Turn on USB Debugging on your phone. For that follow – “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging”.
  5. Next, turn off your phone.
  6. Reboot the phone into recovery mode in this way-
    1. You need to press and hold down the X key on the physical keyboard.
    2. While still pressing the X key, press the Power button once to turn on the phone.  Do not let go of the X key.
    3. Release the X key when you see the warning logo (with the exclamation mark inside a triangle).
    4. Press and hold down the Volume Up button, then press the Camera Shutter button.
  7. Now you should be inside recovery mode. Select “Clear storage” to wipe all cached data. This is important !
  8. Select “install zip from SD card”, then select “Choose zip from SD Card”.  Then, browse through your phone’s SD card and select the CyanogenMod 9 archive.  Confirm that you want to flash the file.
  9. Repeat the above step for the Google Apps package.
  10. Select “+++ Go Back +++” and select “reboot system now” for the changes to take effect.
Voila! You have now successfully upgraded your Motorola Droid to Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich via CyanogenMod 9.
