Prieto’s 3D Li-ion high-energy Battery - takes minutes to charge

Over the last decade Battery Technology has hardly produced any significant revolution. Life and technology move so quickly these days that current battery technology can hardly keep up. While the electronic devices that power our lives get exponentially smarter, the batteries that power them has improved only marginally. Many companies has worked on certain parts of the Lithium-ion battery technology but now we have a entire new architecture that is about to revolutionize human lives.

Dr. Amy Prieto, an assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry at Colorado State University since 2005, has invented a new technology that will deliver unparalleled performance in power density, improve energy density, last longer and will be made using highly recyclable materials that don’t require toxic acid to produce energy.

This new technology is being patented in partnership with Colorado State University and the products will soon be commercialized. Around $5.45 million has already been invested in this project.

This new battery termed as "Prieto's Battery" has lots of advantages over the earlier technology.
  • Very High Power-Density
  • Long Cycle Life
  • Safe
  • Greater Energy Density
Earlier Li-ion technology was two-dimensional which limits the direction and speed at which energy can flow. Eventually the battery takes a long time to charge, loses energy quickly, and needs to be replaced often.

Prieto's proprietary 3D Battery Technology has a 3D architecture that integrates nanowire or copper foam substrate, which has higher power and energy densities than any traditional lithium-ion battery. This architecture directly equates to faster lithium-ion transfer that is thermally stable, and is made completely from water-based process.

In near future we will see various applications of this technology. In its prototype version we have already a three-dimensional interior architecture that could be perfect for the electric cars.  We are about to experience this technology in smartphones, Tablets, E-bikes, Electric Vehicles, Robots, Grid Storage - everywhere. It's just a matter of time.

Here is a video that illustrates how Prieto's Battery works -
