Root Motorola Milestone

Today I ‘ll discuss about how to root your Motorola Milestone. Lots of articles are there over the net which might sound confusing to follow. Here I ‘ll discuss the rooting procedure step by step.

Things to know first :

First I assume that none of us is expert enough to avoid mistakes for the first time. So better take a recovery option before jumping into the actual steps. For that we ‘ll use ROM manager available in the Android Market and proceed to choose Flash ClickworkMod Recovery from the menu.In case you are unlucky to install the ROM , this tool might save your money. Using this tool you can easily create a backup of your currently installed ROM and if you need, you can reboot into recovery mode by holding the power key and “X” button simultaneously. This will take you to your earlier OS installation. Please note that flashing into a new ROM would erase all of your current apps and settings. You can useTitanium Backup for this. Professional license for this tool is highly recommended. Dont forget to backup your all important data, files, apps somewhere else. One thing more, you will void your warranty by installing a custom ROM. So better to keep a backup of your current ROM in case the new installation might come out to be crap one.

Steps Involved :

  1. First you have to download the following drivers and files to your computer and save these in a folder:
  2. Motorola USB Drivers for Windows (32-bit version | 64-bit version)
  3. RSD Lite 5.5
  4. Vulnerable Recovery SBF file
  5. Milestone Root Update ZIP file
  6. Next, install the Motorola USB Drivers on your computer. This helps your computer recognize your device once it is connected via USB cable.
  7. Now, rename “milestone_root.zip” to “update.zip
  8. Connect your device to your computer via USB cable.
  9. Copy the renamed file into the root of your phone’s SD card.
  10. Disconnect the USB cable.
  11. Now you need to enable USB Debugging on your device. Follow -> “Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging”.
  12. Reconnect your phone to your computer using the USB cable.
  13. Run the RSD Lite tool on your computer. The application communicates with the phone and show you the model number as “A853” with the status shown as “Connected”.
  14. Next press the “” button, and choose the file named “vulnerable_recovery_only_RAMDLD90_87.sbf”.
  15. After the file is in place, the “Start” button should now be enabled. Press the “Start” button. Your device should boot itself to bootloader mode and start flashing the recovery firmware. You should see the “Finished” notification in the RSD Lite tool once it is done.
  16. Exit RSD Lite.
  17. Disconnect the USB cable from the phone.
  18. Turn off your phone.
  19. Press and hold the “X” button and then press the Power button to boot your phone into recovery mode.
  20. At the next screen, press and hold the Volume Up button and press the Camera button to get inside recovery mode
  21. Once inside recovery mode, select “Clear Storage” to completely wipe out all the data that is inside your phone(in cache).
  22. Select “Install zip from SD card” then select “Choose zip from SD card” and choose the “update.zip” file that you have renamed and copied earlier.  Wait for a few minutes for the installation to finish.
  23. Select “++++ Go Back ++++” and choose “Reboot system now” to restart your device.
Voila! You have now successfully rooted your Motorola Milestone. Enjoy the bunch of features of your rooted Motorola Milestone. Goodluck !
